Shasta Birding Society’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

When: December 10th, at 6:00pm

Where: Turtle Bay Museum

Information below on Zoom meeting details.

Shasta Birding Society is inviting all members, past and present, to celebrate our 50 years in the greater Shasta County area and the North State of California. Our event is limited to two hours, including: displays of artifacts and memorabilia, testimonies and time for sharing, cake and beverages, and an exciting presentation by Erika Iacona.

In 2022, in cooperation with Shasta Birding Society, AltaCal Audubon Society, and Lassen National Park, Erika led Shasta County’s first Northern Saw-whet Owl migration monitoring program. We are all proud of the dedication that Erika has put into this wonderful mission, and love that she will be sharing this with us.

Here are a few things for anyone who wants to join this event by Zoom:

Zoom meeting has a special start time: 6:20 pm to allow those who can attend a chance to enjoy what we hope are the highlights of our evening. Specific speakers of our membership will share moments from our past, present, and our future. Our Zoom time will end after the presentation by Erika.

Mark your calendar and join us:

The Anderson CBC circle covers the towns and communities of Anderson, Cottonwood, Millville Plains, Lake California, and parts of Sunset Hills. The first Anderson CBC count was held on December 22, 2007, and records show there were seven participants. Our count circle is made up of seven sections: Anderson River Park, Millville – Ash Creek Rd, Battle Creek, Jelly’s Ferry, Lake California, Reading Island, and Lonetree with Towns included. Our 2025 event has each section leader assigned and ready for the 126 th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count on December 20, 2025. New in 2025 – Bird Feeder Watch in Anderson CBC Circle: This year, we are looking for anyone living within our Count Circle for the Anderson CBC with Bird Feeders, the knowledge to identify bird species, and knows how to use the application ‘eBird’. Please let us know if you would like to join us for this year’s worldwide birding experience. Just contact, Daniel Bye, CAAD CBC Compiler, at danbye56@gmail.com to learn how you can be a part of our team for this 2025 birding event. Registration is free and if you join us, we will provide you with instructions on how to conduct your bird count properly. The one stipulation there is, is that you must be in the count circle to participate. If you are not sure you are in the circle, contact Daniel to help you figure it out. Deadline to register is December 18 th . We hope to hear from you soon. Thanks!

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has embarked on a controversial control program to protect federally endangered Northern and California Spotted Owls (Stix occidentalis spps.) from displacement by the Barred Owl (Strix varia), a species native to eastern and Midwest north America. Barred Owls have been successfully competing with and displacing the federally protected Spotted Owl throughout the Pacific Northwest for many years. The FWS plans to kill up to 450,000 Barred Owls over the next 30 years to help prevent the feared extinction of the Spotted Owl. The program has been either supported or opposed by a variety of conservation organizations and individuals.

Join us at 7pm Wednesday January 14, 2026 for a special presentation, debating this controversial Barred Owl population control program! Tom Wheeler (Executive Director, Environmental Protection Information Center, Arcata, CA), and Stephen Hernick (Managing Attorney, Wildlife Law Program of Friends of Animals, Greenwood Village, CO) will (calmly) provide opposing viewpoints on this hot topic.

Location: Turtle Bay Nursery Classroom, 1100 Arboretum Dr, Redding, CA 96003
