Shasta Birding Society

Our Mascot

Shasta Birding Society picked the Female Belted Kingfisher as its mascot in 2012. This medium-sized bird has a fluffy crest and the female sports a rust colored band on its chest.

We are lucky that this bird is prevalent in Shasta County. You may see it perched on a branch or wire while it hunts for fish in the nearby stream or lake. A captured fish takes a beating as the Belted Kingfisher pounds it against a surface before being consumed whole.

One could say its call is a dry rattle or a chatter, fitting for our newsletter, Chirp-N-Chatter.
