Turtle Bay Second Saturday Bird Walk

Always wanted to learn more about birds but not sure where to start? Join Shasta Birding Society for a family and beginner friendly bird walk at the benches by the Sundial bridge at 9 am to walk the Turtle Bay Sanctuary Trail and discover the hidden world of birds all around us! The trail is wheelchair accessible and benches are found throughout. The walk will last about 2 hours. Field guides and binoculars are provided. Join our webmaster, Larry Jordan, as we take a leisurely one mile walk along the Turtle Bay Sanctuary Trail. This walk will begin at the south end of the Sundial Bridge and take us along the Sacramento River to view waterfowl, gulls, egrets and herons. One of the best attributes of this trail is that we cannot only enjoy the excellent views along the river, on the other side of the trail we will be able to find several species of songbirds. Raptors are common in the area, including the Bald Eagle and Osprey. Park in the Turtle Bay Parking Lot. Rain cancels. Want more information? Contact Julie Doerr at millvillemurphs@gmail.com

Second Saturday Bird Walk on the Sacramento River Trail

While we have hosted many walks along the River Trail in the Turtle Bay area, this walk will encompass the northern section of the river trail.  This will be an opportunity to observe the recovery of the riverine habitat that was burned during the 2018 Carr Fire and observe our winter bird population along this changed habitat. This area is also the area that Wintu Audubon has put up nesting boxes to support cavity nesting birds whose nesting sites were damaged during the fire. Depending on the group, the desire, and the weather, this walk can be up to a four mile loop. It is a great opportunity to see a beautiful resource for our community, and the wildlife that use it. Meet John Winchell at the parking lot at the South end of Diestelhorst Bridge at 8am for this walk along the River Trail.

2nd Saturday Bird Walk at Turtle Bay

We will return to Turtle Bay and Kutras Lake for the fall and winter seasons. A great cross-section of raptors, waterfowl, gulls, and winter resident passerines can be seen close up with usually a surprise or two on this ½-day walk. We will assemble in the parking area behind the monolith at Turtle Bay. This walk with Roberta and John Winchell is open to the public and all birding skill levels are welcome.
