A Virtual Wildlife Walk with Photographer Jane Dysert

Please join us for our April evening program, local photographer Jane Dysert will share her love of Northern California wildlife by taking us on a virtual nature walk while sharing her knowledge of bird and animal behavior through lots of photos and fun facts. Learn what Jane takes on her walks, including her favorite ID books, the locations that she frequents, and some basic photography tips that anyone can use without taking a deep dive into the technical aspects. Dysert is a self-taught photographer who began while attending sporting events in which her daughter was participating. Now retired from a career in social work, she enjoys early morning walks with her camera four to five days a week. “These relaxing early morning sojourns bring me peace and definitely are good for my mental health.”

Shasta Birding Society is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Altacal Members’ Slide Show & Christmas Bird Count Update

Western Screech-Owl

Western Screech-Owl

Join us for a virtual zoom program with members and friends of Altacal Audubon sharing their photos at our annual Members’ Slide Show, a favorite program for many. There are always some great new, and sometimes old, (that’s OK too) pictures to see and tales to hear. Also, at this program we will hear about plans for the annual Chico and Oroville Christmas bird counts taking place over the following weekends. Contact Jennifer Patten, jpchico@sbcglobal.net, so we know ahead of time how many will be showing photos. You will need to get your photos to Mary Muchowski (director@altacal.org) beforehand on a flashdrive, or have a PowerPoint prepared that you can share on Zoom.

Christmas Bird Count Prep Talk and Photo Sharing

Anna's Hummingbird Male

Anna’s Hummingbird Male

Due to the pandemic, this year’s Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will be unlike any other in the count’s 120-year history – but it will happen! Veteran CBCer, Ken Burton, will lead an interactive discussion of various aspects of the CBC including its history, methodology, and scientific value; this year’s modified protocols; tips for counters, especially effort tracking and estimating bird numbers; local counting opportunities; and bird identification as requested. The content and direction of the program will be driven largely by participant input. We can discuss anything relevant to the count; what would make you a better counter? The program will conclude with an opportunity to share a few of your local bird photos from the past year, so pick out your favorites!

Ken Burton has been deeply involved with RRAS since moving here in 2005. He is the author of Common Birds of Northwest California and A Birding Guide to Humboldt County, both published by RRAS. He coordinates the chapter’s Saturday morning Arcata Marsh walk program. He has participated in the CBC almost every year since the mid 1970s, including counts in Arizona, California, Indiana, Mexico, and New York.

Visit rras.org to find out how to get involved with the CBC this year.

Technology for Birders

Did you ever wonder about tools to assist your birding? Our panel will address what’s available, from the most basic (binoculars, Linda Aldrich) to the most sophisticated (apps for smart phones, Chad Scott). Larry Jordan will talk about bird photography and Dan Greaney will tell us how to use eBird and what it does. Some of this will be basic for beginners, there will be something for the most experienced birders and “news that you can use” for all of us in between.

Dave Bogener Returns to Display His Photos of Great Basin Wildlife

Wood Duck Female

Dave Bogener will return to display his photos of Great Basin wildlife (primarily breeding birds) with some background information on the basin itself. You will remember his presentation in September 2015 on the Birds of Mary Lake. His ability to capture our common backyard birds in action was unique and gave us a greater appreciation of their lives.
