Turtle Bay Second Saturday Bird Walk

Always wanted to learn more about birds but not sure where to start? Join Shasta Birding Society for a family and beginner friendly bird walk at the benches by the Sundial bridge at 9 am to walk the Turtle Bay Sanctuary Trail and discover the hidden world of birds all around us! The trail is wheelchair accessible and benches are found throughout. The walk will last about 2 hours. Field guides and binoculars are provided. Join our program chair, Katherine Larson, and Stephanie Hughes, our education chair, as we take a leisurely one mile walk along the Turtle Bay Sanctuary Trail. This walk will begin at the south end of the Sundial Bridge and take us along the Sacramento River to view waterfowl and possibly gulls, egrets and herons. One of the best attributes of this trail is that we cannot only enjoy the excellent views along the river, on the other side of the trail we will be able to find several species of songbirds. Raptors are common in the area, including the Bald Eagle and Osprey. Park in the Turtle Bay Parking Lot. Rain cancels. Want more information? Contact Katherine at katherinelarson01@gmail.com

Bird Blind at Turtle Bay Goes Live!

Please join us to celebrate the dedication of the Bill Oliver Bird Blind. Bill’s lifelong passion for birds led him to help found the Wintu Audubon Society in 1975; he served as president of the society on four different occasions and was the coordinator for the annual Christmas Bird Count for 45 years. Bill led countless bird walks over the years, compiled statistics, and helped introduce others to his love of birding. In 2021, Bill was honored by the Shasta Environmental Alliance with the Environmental Champion Award for his work as a citizen scientist. The bird blind site is seeing renewed restoration efforts, the permanent pushing back of invasive blackberry species and replanting of diverse, bird-attracting native plants. The ceremony will be followed by a family friendly birdwalk. Begining birders are encouraged to join us. All are welcome. We will meet at the bird blind about a 1/4 of a mile down the bird sanctuary trail past the museum. Hope to see you there.

John Reginato River Access Trail

Nashville Warbler

Join us to look and listen for spring warblers in the big oaks along this Sacramento River trail.  If we’re lucky, we might also see the resident pair of Peregrine Falcons or Barn Owl.

Meet at the parking lot near the boat launch at the John Reginato River Access at 3855 South Bonnyview Road.  This area is also known as the South Bonnyview boat ramp.  We will spend about two hours walking less than two miles on a rocky path with river cobblestones.  Hiking boots are recommended.  There are rest rooms at the boat ramp.
