Manzanita Lake

We will be hiking around Manzanita Lake looking for migratory and fall forest species before the cold sets in. Manzanita Lake is located adjacent to the north entrance to Lassen Volcanic Ntional Park, approximately 48 miles east of Redding off of Highway 44. For those travelling from Redding you can meet at the Kutras Lake gravel parking lot at 7:00 am to pool or caravan, otherwise meet at the Lassen Park Loomis Museum Parking Lot at 8:00 am. Wear sturdy shoes and layers in anticipation of changeable weather, bring a lunch/snack. Entrance fees for Lassen Volcanic National Park are $30 per vehicle or free with Annual/Whiskeytown/Golden Access etc passes. Restrooms are located at the Loomis Museum complex. Rain/Snow cancels.

We have enjoyed the birding and camping at the Lost Creek Group Campground for several years, so we are scheduling this event again this year in conjunction with Altacal Audubon. Due to the extended snow pack we have scheduled the event later than usual. Group Camp sites #3 and 4 have been reserved for the nights of Friday, July 21st and Saturday, July 22nd. Campers can arrive at the campsite at a time of their choosing on Friday after 1pm and must break camp by noon Sunday. We are inviting the Redwood Region, Peregrine, Mendocino, Plumas and Redbud Chapters to join us.

Species expected include Bald Eagle, Osprey, Pileated Woodpecker, White-headed Woodpecker, Black-backed Woodpecker, Williamson’s Sapsucker, Vaux’s Swift, Common Nighthawk, Bufflehead, Gray Jay, Brown Creeper, American Dipper, Mountain Bluebird, Yellow Warbler, Western Tanager and Cassin’s Finch.

We will meet at the Loomis Museum parking lot at 8am sharp on Saturday morning to bird Manzanita Lake to be immediately followed by our yearly chapter picnic at the Lost Creek Campground. The rest of the itinerary is open and will depend on the interests of the participants. Folks can either camp at Lost Creek or drive up for either or both Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday day trippers should meet at the Kutra’s Park meeting place at 7:00 am Saturday morning to car pool or at the Loomis Museum parking lot at 8am sharp. Day trippers for Sunday, June 20th, will meet at the campsite at 8:00 am. Lost Creek has primitive facilities; vault toilets and no electricity. Potable water is available. Birding Manzanita Lake

Bald Eagle

Let’s take a short 2-mile hike around Manzanita Lake to enjoy the fresh air and fall colors. We’ll look for the interesting variety of upland, forest and water species that surround the lake. Carpools/Caravan leave Kutras Lake parking lot at 6:30 am or meet at the Loomis Museum parking lot at 7:30 am. Wear good hiking boots and dress for changeable weather, bring snacks and lunch.

Entrance fee is $30 for a 7-day Vehicle Pass, available ahead of time on-line or at the park entrance. Annual Pass for Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, America The Beautiful Pass, and Senior Pass are also valid for entrance.

Birding Manzanita Lake

White-headed Woodpecker Male

We will bird the 2 mile Manzanita Lake loop trail looking for mountain birds and early warblers. Likely suspects are Bald Eagle, American Dipper, Clark’s Nutcracker, Bufflehead, White-headed Woodpecker, Brown Creeper and Mountain Chickadee. Meet at the Loomis Museum parking lot at 8:00am. Wear layers of clothes as it will most likely be pretty cool in the morning. Entrance fees are required. If you don’t have a pass I suggest you arrange ahead of time to ride with someone that has a Golden Age pass.
