Lema Ranch Birdwalk

The wide-open vistas, grassy fields, large ponds and oak woodlands of Lema Ranch offer quite a variety of bird species.  Winter ducks and sparrows are a particular treat this time of year and if we’re lucky, we might spot a Common Gallinule.

Meet at 8:00 am at Gate 10 located at the end of Lema Road, just past the maintenance facility.  Park on the right-hand side of the road by the maintenance facility.  We will spend about 2 hours walking two miles on paved, accessible trails around three of the ponds.  There is a bathroom located near Gate 10.

*All participants, ages 5 and older, must provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours prior to the field trip. Participants must practice social distancing when outdoors on field trips and must wear masks and practice social distancing while indoors. Participation is not currently allowed for persons under the age of 5.

Local Weekday Bird Walk at Lema Ranch

Lema Ranch offers a variety of habitats, from ponds to open fields, to woodlands attracting many species of birds. In February, the winter ducks (sometimes including the exquisite Hooded Merganser) and winter sparrows will still be lingering and the earliest spring migrants may have begun to appear, such as Tree Swallow. A specialty of the park is Common Gallinule. Larry Jordan’s bluebird trail produces (sometimes numerous) Western Bluebirds. Various raptor species are possible such as American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk and Merlin. Please join trip leader Sally NeSmith in the parking lot reached from Shasta View to Hemingway at 8:00 am for an interesting mid-week bird walk.
