This little known State land borders the North side of Cottonwood Creek where it enters the Sacramento River. Marshes, small ponds, broad bands of undisturbed riparian forest, valley oak and grasslands some of which have been planted with shrubs and cottonwoods characterize the area. Bill Oliver will lead us in this ½-day outing. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water be aware that toilet facilities are not available. Meet 7:30 at the Kutras Parking Area to carpool. Anderson folks can catch us at the Anderson Outlet Stores at 8:00 am.

Local Weekday Bird Walk at Battle Creek State Wildlife Area
The California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife has restored riparian habitat and maintains trails along Battle Creek including a connecting trail through an extensive marsh and impoundment to the Coleman National Fish Hatchery. During this 1/2 –day trip we expect to see a good variety of winter passerines, Bald Eagles, rails and ducks. Wear sturdy shoes. Trails are groomed but ground is uneven. Our Vice President and Program Co-ordinator Linda Aldrich will lead. We meet at the parking lot at Battle Creek Wildlife Area, reached by taking highway 5 or highway 273 south to Anderson, turning off at the Outlet Mall and following the signs to Coleman Fish Hatchery.
Local Weekday Bird Walk at Clear Creek Waste Water Treatment Ponds
We are again scheduling a visit to the ponds targeting wintering waterfowl and very early migrating shorebirds. The abundant winter rains should provide abundant open water and muddy shorelines for these species. Assemble at the Treatment Plant’s Administration Building at the end of Metz Road at 8:00 am to meet your leader, Matt Gould. This is a 1/2-day trip that may end in the early afternoon if the birding is good.
Here are the directions to the Clear Creek Plant. Take Hwy. 273 and look for River Ranch Road after crossing Clear Creek. Cross over the Railroad tracks and turn left on Eastside Road. The entrance on Metz Road is on the right.
Local Mid-Week Bird Walk at Cascade Park
This small park in southeast Redding fronts on an oxbow slough of the Sacramento River and the confluence of Olney Creek. Abundant riparian vegetation and still water attract duck and wading birds and open fields provide a variety of habitats. A wide paved path circles the park. Meet our leader, Linda Aldrich, at the park. It is located at the end of Girvan Road. Look for Girvan Road on the left off Hwy. 273 north of the Clear Creek bridge.
Local Weekday Bird Walk at Lema Ranch
Lema Ranch, an oasis of open space in Redding, is excellent year-around birding. The ponds, orchards, and fields of the McConnell Foundation Headquarters provide an abundance of bird species. We will look for Common Gallinules, Marsh Wrens, Great-tailed Grackles, Lark Sparrows and other Lema Ranch specialties. This will be a 2-3 hour walk on paved trails with fine public restrooms. Meet our leader, Linda Aldrich, at the north parking lot off Hemingway Street. Hemingway Street is across from Mountain View school on Shasta View Drive.
