Lema Ranch, an oasis of open space in Redding, is excellent year-around birding. The ponds, orchards, and fields of the McConnell Foundation Headquarters provide an abundance of bird species. We will look for Common Gallenules, Marsh Wrens, Great-tailed Grackles, Lark Sparrows and other Lema Ranch specialties. This will be a 2-3 hour walk on paved trails with fine public restrooms. Meet our leader, Chad Scott, at the north parking lot off Hemingway Street. Hemingway Street is across from Mountain View school on Shasta View Drive.

Local Weekday Bird Walk at Mary Lake
An old dam on Jenny Creek forms this small lake in a west Redding subdivision. Developed lakeside vegetation, a small marsh, and oak woodlands have created a varied habitat for birds. Green Herons can be seen up close and California Thrashers are resident. Meet at the south parking lot of the Redding Civic Auditorium to carpool for this ½-day outing. Bill Oliver will lead.
Local Weekday Bird Walk at Clear Creek WasteWater Treatment Ponds
We are again scheduling regular visits to the ponds targeting migrating shorebirds. Although improvements in tertiary treatment require fewer ponds, we are pleased that the administration has dedicated Pond #7 to the birds (see map) by providing shallow pools and mud flats. Unfortunately Pond #7 is at the far end of the complex requiring a walk of 2 miles (r/t) along a gaveled roadway. So wear sturdy shoes. Assemble at the Treatment Plant’s Administration Building at the end of Metz Road at 8:00 am to meet your leader. This is a ½-day trip that may end in the early afternoon if the birding is good.
Here are the directions to the Clear Creek Plant. Take Hwy. 273 and look for River Ranch Road after crossing Clear Creek. Cross over the Railroad tracks and turn left on Eastside Road. The entrance on Metz Road is on the right.
Battle Creek Wildlife Area Local Weekday Bird Walk
The Battle Creek Wildlife Area totals 582 acres of riparian forest, marshes and oak woodlands and hosts a diverse variety of migratory and resident birds. We plan to be in the field 3-3/12 hours walking approx. 3 miles primarily on level improved trails. A pit type toilet is available at the parking area, No drink water is available. Following the walk we will check-out the Hummingbird feeders at the hatchery and eat lunch. We will be leaving from the south parking lot of the Redding Civic Auditorium at 8:00 am to carpool or meet us at the Battle Creek Wildlife Area around 8:30.
