Second Saturday Bird Walk at
 Battle Creek

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has restored riparian habitat and maintains trails along Battle Creek including connecting trails through a marsh to the Coleman National Fish Hatchery. Bald Eagles, other raptors, marsh dwellers (both Sora and Virginia Rails), and early summer resident passerines are usually seen or heard during this 1/2-day trip. Wear sturdy shoes. Trails are groomed but ground is uneven. Meet Steve Royce, kkona3@yahoo.com, at the parking lot at Battle Creek Wildlife Area, reached by taking Hwy I5 or Hwy 273 south to Anderson, turning off at the Outlet Mall and following the signs east to Coleman Fish Hatchery.

Second Saturday Bird Walk at Clear Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

Our target for this visit to the Clear Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant will again be migratory shore birds and passerines. We hope shallow ponds and muddy shorelines will still be available for shorebirds. Northern Orioles and Western Kingbirds are a near certainty. Assemble at the Treatment Plant’s Administration Building at the end of Metz Road at 8:00 am to meet your leader, Matt Gould. This is a ½-day trip that may end in the early afternoon if the birding is good.
Take Hwy. 273 towards Anderson and look for River Ranch Road after crossing Clear Creek. Cross over the railroad tracks and turn left on Eastside Road. The entrance to Metz Road is on the right.

Second Saturday Bird Walk at Clear Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

It’s been very dry this winter so early shore birds could be scarce. If we’re lucky, we may get some rain by this trip. Even so this is a fun walk with riparian and open river habitat, in addition to the ponds. Possible species include American Pipit and Greater Yellowlegs. Blue-winged Teal have been seen on occasion.

We will meet at the end of Metz Road at 8:00 a.m. George Horn will lead. Phone 524-7484. Directions to the Clear Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant are: Take Hwy. 273 South, look for River Ranch Road after crossing Clear Creek. Cross over the railroad tracks and turn left on Eastside Road, the entrance to Metz Road is on the right. Please try to be prompt, I’ll have release of liability forms that are required to be signed and there is a locked gate. Hope to see you there!
