Dan Bye’s Big Week In Arizona – NOTE LOCATION CHANGE!

This two-part presentation will start with an introduction of ‘How to Create an eBird Trip Report’ and then Daniel will share his ‘Big Week in Arizona’ through the final product of the trip report. Showing photos and new destinations traveled through the state of Arizona from August 10th-17th of this year in the pursuit of finding new lifers. Sharing details of several hotspots in the southeast and northern part of the state.

Composed Narrative of the Field Trip Report:

I had planned for this trip months in advance with the intent of finding new lifers to add to my life list. My goal was to find 45 new life birds to break through to the 500th milestone on my life list. That did not happen on this trip but I completed the trip rewarded that I did my best. Our family, my wife and our two dogs, traveled a great distance together and made it to all of our destinations and learned a great deal more about the State of Arizona.

This Field Trip Report is the best way that I can share this journey for anyone interested in seeing the various bird species I saw at new locations I searched out.

The Arizona Big Week began on Sunday, August 10, the first day we entered the state. Since we were traveling in our RV, we setup our basecamp at various campgrounds we would camp for one or more nights.

This will be a hybrid meeting located at the Turtle Bay Museum Classroom. Located next to the Riverfront Bistro. Doors open at 6:30!

If you can’t make it to the Turtle Bay Museum Classroom you can join us on Zoom!

Some of My Favorite Bird Photos

Join us for an evening of bird photography from your webmaster, Larry Jordan. Larry joined the Wintu Audubon Society as its webmaster back in May 2008. At the time he had been posting on his own blog, The Birders Report, for about a year, using photos from other photographers (with their permission, of course). Over the years he has created quite a collection of bird photos, several (such as the photo above) taken from the photo blinds available at the Colusa, Delevan, and Sacramento National Wildlife Refuges. Of course several of his photos are taken during our many outings throughout the year as well.

Cavity Nesting Birds and Nestbox Monitoring

Larry Jordan has been enthralled with birds since he spotted a Burrowing Owl in his Oak Run driveway on the way home one evening over 30 years ago. He didn’t know what the bird was so he bought his first field guide and opened up a whole new world of wonder. Since that evening he has been involved in several endeavors to protect birds and advance the joy of birding. He started his own birding blog in 2007 and also posted to the well known 10000 Birds blog. Larry joined Wintu Audubon Society, became the webmaster for the organization, and began photographing birds in 2008. There are 85 species of cavity-nesting birds in North America (excluding Mexico) and 72 of them occur in the western United States. So, please join our webmaster as he discusses the joys of monitoring cavity nesting birds. He will discuss nest box design and highlight some of his favorite cavity nesting bird photos and videos from the last fifteen years.

Waterbird Ecology and Movement in the Saline Lakes of the Great Basin

For our May evening program, Cory Overton will discuss the efforts of the USGS to create a science strategy to monitor and assess the hydrology of saline lakes in the Great Basin and the migratory birds and other wildlife dependent on those habitats.  They have marked American Avocet and Wilson’s Phalarope with GPS and MOTUS style radio tags. The twenty terminal lakes and playas to be studied include Mono Lake, Tule Lake, Summer Lake, and Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

Cory Overton is a Wildlife Biologist and has worked at the Dixon Field Station of the Western Ecological Research Center for 25 years, specializing in spatial ecology and demographics of migratory birds. During that period, Cory completed a Master’s degree at Oregon State University investigating band-tailed pigeon ecology and a Ph.D. at the University of California – Davis on Ridgway’s Rail.  An avowed data geek, his research focuses on applied ecology and enabling adaptive management of public and private lands and effective data delivery.
