Battle Creek Wildlife Area
Battle Creek Wildlife Area is a CDFW fee area which can certainly handle and thrive with this winter’s wet season and provide us with great birding opportunities. Please join us at Wildlife area’s parking lot located at: 23999 Coleman Fish Hatchery Rd, Anderson, CA
These 582 acres of riparian forests, marshes, and oak woodland supports a diverse variety of migratory and resident bird species, as well as aquatic and terrestrial mammals. Bald eagles and ospreys nest here in spring.
We will explore the two primary trails, Oaktree and Coleman Hatchery, for a 2.6-mile hike for the best viewing of the area.

Lema Ranch Bird Walk
The wide-open vistas, grassy fields, large ponds and oak woodlands of Lema Ranch offer quite a variety of bird species. Winter waterfowl, woodpeckers and sparrows are a particular treat this time of year and if we’re lucky, we might spot a Canvasback or a Merlin!
Meet at 8:00 am at Gate 10 located at the end of Lema Road, just past the maintenance facility. Park on the right-hand side of the road by the maintenance facility. We will walk the paved trails to view all five ponds. There is a bathroom located near Gate 10. Rain cancels the outing. Contact Larry Jordan at webmaster@wintuaudubon.org for more information.
Hog Lake
We will visit to Hog Lake in Tehama County to check on waterfowl and upland wintering birds. Caravan leaves the parking lot at Kutras at 6:45 am or meet at the parking lot at Hog Lake at 7:30 am (Approximate Sunrise). Hog Lake is located off of State Route 36 about 9.5 miles east of Red Bluff. Look for the BLM sign on the left side of the highway. Bring layered clothes and sturdy boots as the hiking is very rocky at points. There is no fee for use of this BLM property. If we have time, we will drive a few miles over to Hogsback Road and do some birding there too. Rain cancels the trip. Contact ebkashuba@gmail.
Waterfowl Identification
Have you ever had trouble identifying a duck flying overhead at your favorite lake or river? Can you ID flocks of birds as you scan an open waterway at Turtle Bay or the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge? If you’d like to learn more about identification of our local waterfowl you won’t want to miss this presentation.
Welcome Mike Carion, a retired Chief of Law Enforcement for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and a former Wintu Audubon board member. He got his degree in wildlife management from Humboldt State and spent thirty-two years as a game warden of various ranks, training all of the wardens in many areas including waterfowl enforcement. He retired in 2014 then assisted Hawaii Department of Wildlife in the development of a training academy for wardens and began working for Ducks Unlimited until July of 2020 when he officially retired again and moved to Hawaii with his wife Nicole and started an Audubon group there. Mike’s presentation will cover how to identify the species of ducks and geese most likely to be found in Shasta County and surrounding areas. He will discuss helpful identifying characteristics of these waterfowl to narrow down the possibilities we encounter in the field.
