Local Weekday Bird Walk at Mary Lake

An old dam on Jenny Creek forms this small lake in a west Redding subdivision. Developed lakeside vegetation, a small marsh, and oak woodlands have created a varied habitat for birds. Green Herons can be seen up close and California Thrashers are resident. Meet at the south parking lot of the Redding Civic Auditorium to carpool for this ½-day outing. Bill Oliver will lead.

McArthur/Burney Falls State Park Outing

This park in northeastern Shasta County is famous for its falls and nesting Black Swifts. The swifts will have migrated but the falls, riparian zone along Dry Burney Creek and Lake Britton should provide a wide variety of birds. Bring a lunch, water, and sturdy shoes. We will rendezvous in the parking lot on the South side of the Redding Civic Auditorium. Eastern Shasta County folks can meet us at the Safeway parking lot in Burney at 8:30 am. We should return to Redding in late afternoon.

Local Weekday Bird Walk at Clear Creek WasteWater Treatment Ponds

We are again scheduling regular visits to the ponds targeting migrating shorebirds. Although improvements in tertiary treatment require fewer ponds, we are pleased that the administration has dedicated Pond #7 to the birds (see map) by providing shallow pools and mud flats. Unfortunately Pond #7 is at the far end of the complex requiring a walk of 2 miles (r/t) along a gaveled roadway. So wear sturdy shoes. Assemble at the Treatment Plant’s Administration Building at the end of Metz Road at 8:00 am to meet your leader. This is a ½-day trip that may end in the early afternoon if the birding is good.

Here are the directions to the Clear Creek Plant. Take Hwy. 273 and look for River Ranch Road after crossing Clear Creek. Cross over the Railroad tracks and turn left on Eastside Road. The entrance on Metz Road is on the right.

2nd Saturday Bird Walk at Anderson River Park

Our regular ½-day bird walk will again be switched from Shasta College to a well-watered site—this time the Anderson River Park. This gem of riparian habitat has ponds, marsh and oak woodlands accessible by many groomed trails. All birding skill levels are welcome. We will assemble at the amphitheater in the park.
