John Reginato River Access Trail

Join us for a walk in the shade of the big oaks along this Sacramento River trail. This is a great place to see a large variety of the year round resident birds like wrens and towhees in the dense, shrubby vegetation, various woodpeckers in the oaks, and birds of prey on the open river – eagles, osprey, and if we’re lucky, maybe a Peregrine Falcon. This time of year we expect migrating warblers as well.

Meet at 7:30 am Saturday morning, September 14th, at the canoe, kayak and raft launch at the John Reginato River Access at 3810 South Bonnyview Road. This area is also known as the South Bonnyview boat ramp. We will spend about two hours walking less than two miles on a rocky path with river cobblestones.  Hiking boots are recommended.  There is a port-a-potty at the boat ramp.

Clear Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

We are again scheduling a visit to the ponds targeting waterfowl, shorebirds and migrating warblers. Assemble at the Treatment Plant’s Administration Building at the end of Metz Road at 7:30 am sharp to meet your leader, Dan Bye. This is a 1/2-day trip that may end in the early afternoon if the birding is good. Directions to the Clear Creek Plant: Take Hwy 273 south, after crossing Clear Creek and past the Win-River Casino, take the second left turn at River Ranch Road and cross over the railroad tracks. Birding Basics at Turtle Bay Bird Sanctuary

The miracle of spring migration is beginning! We will discover which birds have left their winter homes and returned to our area to raise their young. Or are they just passing through Redding on their way to their breeding grounds further north? Find out by joining us on this series of walks geared toward beginning birdwatchers, but all skill levels are welcome to share in the fun. We usually see between 30 and 36 bird species around the Sundial Bridge. Meet at the Turtle Bay Redding Boat Launch, located behind the Redding Civic Auditorium for a leisurely two-hour stroll on accessible paved and gravel trails along the Sacramento River. Bathrooms can be found at several locations along the way. Binoculars are available to borrow, and instructions will be provided for their use. Rain will cancel. Nur Pon Open Space

Join Wintu Audubon Society for a bird walk around Nur Pon on Saturday, September 23 at 8:00 am. Nur Pon, or “Salmon Run” in the Wintu language, was once known as Henderson Open Space before the City of Redding and numerous other agencies began a restoration project that established a side channel along the Sacramento River for salmon spawning. The parkland has been cleared of debris, much of the nonnative vegetation has been removed, the area fenced and secured, and more restoration work is underway. Wintu Audubon Education Chair Tricia Ford will lead the easy walk of approximately 1.5 miles, taking about three hours to identify the birds of river and oak woodland. Binoculars will be available for loan. Hiking boots are recommended for the river cobble. Bring water and a snack. Nur Pon is off Hartnell Avenue at the intersection of Parkview Avenue and Henderson Road on the east side of the river. Park behind the Cobblestone Shopping Center (once the site of Raley’s Supermarket) inside the wrought iron fence.
