What’s Belize Got That We Don’t?

Not yellow-billed magpies, but plenty of their own beauties! Chapter members Jay & Terri Thesken accompanied several US Fish & Wildlife birders along with two naturalists from Belize on a boat trip through Belize and Guatemala last January. Their resulting slideshow includes shorebirds, pelagic birds, tropical birds, raptors and songbirds. Come join Jay and Terri as they present their travelogue.

Second Saturday Bird Walk at Cascade Community Park

Located at the end of Girvan Road east off Hwy 273, this small park borders the Sacramento River at the confluence of Olney Creek. The ½ mile paved trail has several dirt trails providing access to the river and the mouth of Olney Creek. Eighty winter resident species have been seen, including Hooded Merganser, Merlin, Fox Sparrow, Yellow-billed Magpie (they used to be abundant in a large Valley Oak in the NE corner of the park; a few survived the virus), plus the usual backyard species. Meet your leaders Jeannette and Harvey Carroll at the park at 8:00am for this ½-day walk.

New Bluebird Trail Goes Up In Redding

Girl Scout Troop 70173

March 6th we were contacted by Heather McNeal, the leader of local Girl Scout Troop 71073, to help with creation of a new Western Bluebird Trail in the Redding area. Heather had already done the groundwork for the project and simply needed some help with the specifics of how to construct the nest boxes and where to place them. We were happy to help!

Girl Scouts Installing Bluebird Boxes

There are fifteen enthusiastic girls in troop 71073 and each girl, with a little help from some handy adults, put together fifteen quality nest boxes that were ready to install on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17th.

When these girls found out that cavity nesting birds needed help, they were all in on putting up birdhouses on the Sacramento River Trail.

Girl Scouts Installing Bluebird Boxes

The troop did a great job installing the fifteen new nest boxes and will now begin monitoring the trail for nesting birds. We are excited about the addition of these birdhouses and the variety of species they will help. These nest boxes can be used by:

  • Western Bluebird
  • Oak Titmouse
  • Tree Swallow
  • Violet-green Swallow
  • White-breasted Nuthatch
  • Ash-throated Flycatcher
  • House Wren

Stay tuned for updates!

Second Saturday Bird Walk at Clear Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

Our target for this visit to the Clear Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant will again be migratory shore birds and passerines. We hope shallow ponds and muddy shorelines will still be available for shorebirds. Northern Orioles and Western Kingbirds are a near certainty. Assemble at the Treatment Plant’s Administration Building at the end of Metz Road at 8:00 am to meet your leader, Matt Gould. This is a ½-day trip that may end in the early afternoon if the birding is good.
Take Hwy. 273 towards Anderson and look for River Ranch Road after crossing Clear Creek. Cross over the railroad tracks and turn left on Eastside Road. The entrance to Metz Road is on the right.
